backstory and excerpt of my newest devotional book

I'm back from Alaska still awed by mesmerizing mountains, spawning salmon, and humpback whales...

Entering my speaking run, I'll probably be a little less bloggy in September...but I wanted to send you the foreword (from my dear friend, Jennifer Rothschild) and first four chapters of my newest book that just released a few days ago.

Here's the backstory. MOPS international does a survey regularly to make sure they are connecting with the needs and interests of the people they serve. In their last survey they saw a clear longing for a "meaty" devotional that focussed on intimacy with God so they went on a search for a writer...What's emerged through our partnership is devotional for people who have sworn off buying devotionals.

Intimate Conversations is more like a personal one-on-one than a book. In it I think you'll find the voice of a friend. Each piece is accompanied by substantial questions for journaling/reflection or group discussion.

For those familiar with my writings, it's more like Sitting in God's Sunshine (though that title still makes me cringe) than Anonymous. And it is packaged for women of all ages, though the issues and principles are equally shared by men and women.

So who will enjoy it?

I think anyone who is generally weary of puffy answers; anyone who wonders if intimacy with God is accessible in every season of life; anyone who craves questions that can't be answered with a "yes" or "no". I think you'll want to give it as a gift, but I'm hoping you'll first digest it personally.

Here's a link to the 76 second book trailer. If you have a chance to read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

thanks so much for the four chapters! (i'll be getting the book soon.)

this work of art, of the Spirit, undoubtedly will bring healing to a lot of stopped-up or broken hearts! the subject is hot on the hearts of ordinary people everywhere (it's been hot on God the Father's from before time.) during my reading of the excerpt, i don't know precisely where, i wept. my whole journey has been a long search for intimacy; what knocks me out, completely melting my heart, is that intimacy was never my idea. i hadn't a clue as to what i've been longing for: the personal closeness with Another, Someone always being there, this huge desire to be known in entirety, and for me to love and be loved, while knowing only in part--- it was the Father's idea.

standing in the middle of my study, i spontaneously raise my arms as if reaching straight into heaven, tears flowing out of my past and present deep yearning; i understand the "title" Desire of the Ages (though i've never read the book---other than the Bible---or seen the film, if there is one) and all i can do is yield, praising, safely embraced in his arms. You, my Father, (PaPa), are all i've ever wanted; and how You keep confirming that personal closeness, walking with you moment by moment is what You want too, it's what you've always wanted from your people, floods me with joy that can't be held back. You, Yourself, are more than enough... more than enough... it is You, only You.

i'm awed by the timeliness of your work, this book.

Bob, thank you so much for this encouraging response! And I apologize that it took me so long to get back to you. I'm a wee bit mono-focused when I'm in my speaking season...:-)

Awesome. I know just who to give this to, and I'm about to read the sample.

I know that I will want to share it even before reading it.

Thanks for allowing God to use you to inspire me.

thank you Sherrie!
