Jenna Levon, a freelance writer in her twenties was one of the first to look at my brand new book, Why Trust Jesus? I was very encouraged with her with words, because I wrote this book for both believers, doubters and spiritual seekers. Below are words from Jenna.
Ten years ago, I made a huge mistake. I can picture the table where I sat in my high school cafeteria. I quickly found myself in a heated conversation about Jesus with my new friend, who was Jewish. As a Christian, I asserted that Jesus was crucified, he rose, and He’s coming back some day.
Stephanie disagreed. My defense? “Because it happened. It’s what the Bible says, and it’s what I believe.” Hindsight is always 20/20, right? I am disappointed that I spoke with such little kindness, grace, and clarity about my Savior. I’m sure this lunchroom encounter left my friend with a bitter taste in her mouth not only for (foolish) me, but for Christians in general.
I wish I’d had a book like Dave Sterrett’s Why Trust Jesus? An Honest Look at Doubts, Plans, Hurts, Desires, Questions, and Pleasures (Moody Publishers, 2010). It raises the nine most common objections to Christianity and backs up the Truth with honest answers from a real guy.
How would you respond to someone who said, “Why should I trust Jesus when life is just fine without him?” Or, “Why trust Jesus when there are so many other spiritual paths?” How about, “Why trust Jesus when there‘s so much disagreement about his real identity?” You’re cringing a little, aren’t you?
Sometimes the only encounter with Christ that a person has is through you. So make it good, and make it clear. Stephanie and I are still dear friends today, knowing that our differences make our friendship beautiful. But I learned a tough lesson, stated best in I Peter 3:15-16: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”
Why Trust Jesus? An Honest Look at Doubts, Plans, Hurts, Desires, Questions, and Pleasures by Dave Sterrett is now available at your favorite retail or online bookstore.
