Why Guys Need God by Michael Erre is divided into 4 themes with sub headings under each. Pastor Erre discusses the role of men. Society, including the church, has produced a model image of what a man is expected to be. It is an ideal that is impossible to live up to: defender, provider, and spiritual leader; charitable, passionate, and able to coach little league. Genesis 1:26-27, states that man is made in God's image. Erre cleverly discusses equality of male and female. "For women and men to be equal does not imply that they must be identical."

Being a man I is a good thing. As I read the forward of Why Guys Need God, I was struck with the understanding poured into the words. “I should be more, but I am not.” “Let us make man in our image…” Whether male or female, we are made in the image of God. Erre is quick to point out that we are not God, but we reflect his image.

I suppose men often feel the external forces trying to feminize them. In Why Guys Need God, I have come to understand that many guys spend a lot of time struggling between their masculine nature and who society, church, and their misinterpretation of the Bible want them to be. The fact is that God made guys. He made them different from women, so that they may complement each other. Men should not feel sinful because they have a sex drive and a drive for success.

I had the great opportunity to sit under his teaching for about two years, and what I love about this guy is that he is never hesitant to be transparent and vulnerable, whether it be through his writing or his sermon's.
