What is the church supposed to be and what is it supposed to look like?
What is the church supposed to be and what is it supposed to look like?
That’s an excellent question and one that I’ve been dealing with a lot myself lately. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I’ll give it my best shot ☺
I think the best approach would be to look back at the New Testament and see what it tells us about the church. Granted, it doesn’t give us a straightforward template, but it does provide us with “snapshots” of early church life. It also gives us a starting place to understand the role of the church and what it’s supposed to be.

isn't that the question, abby. i'd love to see the conversant answer, as i have been equally unsatisfied with the current model we have in most of our community/country. here are a few observations of things i believe the Church is NOT supposed to be, which i see (sometimes often, sometimes occasionally):
- a primarily social assembly
- a place to receive an inspirational message that you could get from an advice columnist
- a safe area to block out all the undesirables and collect similar people
- a body of people who need to be careful what they say, lest they offend one of the super-cool non-Christians they want to attract
- a business
- a place to amass knowledge and do nothing with it in the world surrounding
- an entertainment park, filled with mega rad games and laser shows
Excellent points, Jay!
