Why do you buy what you buy? (Fragmented thoughts of a consumer)
created on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 05:57

Ok, I admit it. I am a tech freak. Or, I was until about 6 months ago. See, I bought it all. The HDTV. The nice laptop. The smartphone. The bluetooth. The wireless setups. I mean, if it was shiny and new, I wanted it.

Thing is, I have noticed that this aspect has changed in my life. I started by getting rid of the smartphone. Then I stopped watching TV as much. Now, a few weeks ago, I had the chance to buy a new laptop or a good guitar for my ministry.

I chose the guitar.

See, I am starting to think that as believers we have the choice to be culture consumers  or culture changers. I mean, what do we spend our money on? Do we buy things that make us happy, or do we buy things that can help improve the world around us?

Now, before you call me a tree hugger, I don't think it is wrong to have posessions. I am just thinking that we live in excess. We consume more than we produce. We constantly buy, not out of need, but out of want for status and social standing.

I think we all need to take a much needed look at our buying habits. We need to get out of a self centered rut and ask how we can improve the space around us.
