We live in an entirely self-centered cultured. Whether "self" refers directly to the individual, or to homeostatic group, most things we do are a sort of self-promotion in the arena of the social. The most popular websites (Youtube, Myspace, Facebook, eHarmony, Digg) are sites based on fulfilling the selfish need to feel wanted, appreciated, and loved. Even the reluctant e-community members are admittedly selfish. They do it to "Keep in touch" with friends, and "update people on my life" in the laziest way possible.
So, why do we blog? Admittedly, there are few selfless avenues of blogging out there. The idea of sharing your own commentaries, opinions, or findings is, first and foremost, one of extreme egoism. I have read very few blogs that are even half-selfish. The "People Must Know" category is among these, but even then, there is a post-modern journalistic sense of megalomania attached to it.
So, why do we blog? I've read plenty of blog where someone felt the need to mass-share their opinion, and then end the blog with "I might be wrong. Any thoughts?" I know, it's a cry for validation. And I have made that cry myself before. I can't help it. I'm and Aspie.
Why am I blogging then? I really don't often feel the need to share my opinion on the matter. I am more prone to joke about it, or to simply present another side whether or not I agree with it. I also am not that well-informed. I prefer to form my opinions the way God intended: baseless and unverified "facts" that make my life easier.
To be honest, I am blogging simply to blog. I recently pseudo-finished my educational experience. I am finding that I miss the mental strain, and the critical (positive) nature of my peers. While my wife does a very good job of keeping me on my toes (never make an off-handed comment about something you heard on the radio while she's in the room. You will doubt your very being), I still want more. Greed, another very modern, human trait.
So, I am going to submit my ideas, and my work to the critical panel that is the interwebs. I know, at this stage, conversant life may not be the best way to reach millions, but I'd rather have the opinions of 10 highly intelligent and discerning individuals than millions of sycofantic readers.
That is all. Until next time, peace out, Party People.
