On Tuesday the world changed. How do I know this? No, it wasn’t from Obama’s inspiring speech, or the masses of hopeful faces gathered in DC, or even that our new president’s smiling face graced the cover every newsstand magazine. It’s because I got a baby shower invitation—an invitation specifying that all gifts should be “organic, fair trade, local or indie, and non-toxic.” My friend is about to bring forth a new little life into this new world. Gone are the days of cheap disposable diapers from Walmart! Here are the days of fair trade baby formula and organic pacifiers!
We have entered a new world of baby shower etiquette. The only baby shower faux pas I used to worry about was leaving the price tag on the box. But now it’s a whole new world for baby showers. What is worse: buying something that’s organic but not fair trade—or vice versa? Is there a website somewhere that can help me discern the toxicity levels of baby bootees? I know to stay away from “Made in China” tags, but what if it’s “Made in Mexico?” In Southern California does that count as “local”? Is Trader Joe’s considered “indie” anymore? Help! Emily Post I need a new book!
Well, I think my best bet is to head down to my local WholeFoods. When my friends see my present wrapped in a Whole Foods re-useable grocery bag my gift is sure to be the envy of all the other guests!
