When I was in New York City earlier this year, I took some pictures of a person lying on a couch on a sidewalk in the East Village. I wasn’t sure if he was a hipster or a homeless person. This question has come up numerous times in my hipster field research over the last couple years, and it’s definitely becoming harder to tell the difference. Apparently the homeless look is hotter than ever. Actually, I first noticed the trend a few years ago in L.A. and wrote a post on my blog entitled “Derelict Chic” back in 2007.

Obama Was Wrong: Let Them Stay in New York!

A couple weeks ago I sat in my quiet living room and watched Sixty Minutes. Strange show. I used to watch it with my father when I was a kid. Somehow, even though they don’t show reruns, everything about the show still seems exactly the same. Same insistent ticking clock, same formats, even Andy Rooney at the end. He always looked kind of perplexed, maybe more so now. Actually, he looks like a large Jim Henson puppet today. Maybe that’s how they keep everything the same.  

Anyway, two weeks ago President Obama was interviewed on Sixty Minutes. The interviewer/puppet leaned forward in his chair and asked our still kind-of-new President what he thinks bonused-bankers should do. President Obama’s reply was simple: “get out of New York.” Sounding almost Palinesque!  “Spend time in the real America. “
