Stick around a worship music culture for long and you’ll hear someone say “The Church shouldn’t sing first-person singular worship songs. We should sing the plural ‘we’ because we need to get away from me and Jesus theology.” But the book of Psalms is filled with “I” songs. We see examples throughout scripture of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs in both singular and plural forms, so both are appropriate for contemporary praise and worship songs, modern hymns and psalm adaptations.

Chris Tomlin has sold tons of records, and more than 40 million people sing his songs in church every week. The man is a corporate worship song-making machine, with four of his compositions in the top 10 of the most sung songs in church, including the current No. 1 CCLI song in the world, "How Great Is Our God."

Late to the music party, Google makes up for it by offering its Music Service for free--mostly. At an event Wednesday afternoon, Google announced that it would not charge for its cloud storage service. For zero dollars Google will hold and stream up to 20,000 songs in the cloud, which is cheap compared to Apple's $24.99 annual price for its similar service iTunes Match. All of the talk of free doesn't mean anything to iPhone users--the service is exclusively for Android users.

The cloud music wars are heating up this week with Apple and Google both releasing their long-awaited, competing services. So far, the latest battle's been messy. Apple quietly released iTunes Match on Monday, a full two weeks after it was supposed to go live, but it was instantly oversubscribed "due to overwhelming demand." Meanwhile, Google is poised to push Google Music Beta out to the public. But would you honestly expect the upending of the music industry as we know it to go smoothly?

It’s hard enough to get young people out of bed and into the pews on a Sunday morning, but two leading black seminaries think they have found a way to grab the next generation: hip-hop. “If we’re going to take young people seriously, we have no choice,” said Alton B. Pollard III, dean of the Howard University School of Divinity.

I know it's often assumed that music videos are something we should do because they're popular in our culture and it's standard protocol for the (secular) music industry. However, I don't want to take my cues for the rightness or wrongness of something from our culture or the music industry, but from God's Word. So let me share two challenges I see with music videos done by artists with explicit Christian content. One challenge is artistic, the other is biblical.
