Question Asked

Do Prophecy Experts Hurt or Help?

People like Hal Lindsey and John Hagee have built up huge followings by predicting the end of the world and the return of Jesus. Does this help or hurt the cause of Christ?

Are they Experts at Prophecy, or Creativity?

This is an excellent question; and is well worth discussing. To begin with, I am not sure I would call them experts. The two figures you brought up both seem to be wrong quite often. Even when they appear to be "right," I doubt their interpretation actually is correct. It is very easy to take metaphorical language from Daniel or Revelation and interpret it based on the current world situation. Personally, I don't think this makes someone an expert in anything but creativity.

I think the distinction here is that they aren't prophesying anything but rather are attempting to interpret prophecies already given. I'm not sure I agree with doing that anyway but personally I'm not willing to trust man's interpretations and understanding. It's a much safer bet to trust God for revelation, understanding and wisdom.

Excellent point. Likewise, we have to find the right interpretive methods for reading the prophecies. We must first hear them in their own context and in their own rite, before jumping to ours.

They hurt the cause among reasoning, rational people and help the cause among the nonthinking thumpers.

Fresnoman,

Thanks for your comment.

I see where you are coming from, but I still don't think they help the cause. I think they often mislead people (for the reasons I listed on my original answer).
