Which Social Networks Do You Belong To and Why?

MySpace. Facebook. Classmates. MyYearBook. Bebo. LiveJournal. BlackPlanet. Hi5. LinkedIn. Tagged. Reunion. 360.Yahoo. Imeem. Friendster. Orkut. Flixster. Fubar. Tickle. CafeMom. Xanga. Yuku. Twitter. Ning. UrbanChat. AsianTown.

As of February 2008*, these are the top 25 social networking sites - and 84% of online consumers belong to at least one online social network. Needless to say, there is a whole lot of social networking going on.

Since I'm relatively new to the ConversantLife community, I would like to take a moment and learn more about your social networking habits, specifically:

  • Which social network(s) do you belong to?
  • Why did you join the social network(s)?
  • Which one(s) do you keep up with and which one(s) are gathering web dust? And why?
  • How valuable is social networking to you? If it all went away tomorrow, would you care?

So please jump in and share with us your social networking story. Next week, I'll share some more interesting social networking facts and trends.

Thanks for your time and I hope you have a great week!

Of this list, I only belong to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I have tried, in the past, Myspace, LiveJournal, Orkut, Xanga, and Flixster, but found them not living up the the needs or standards that I think a good social networking app should have.

I think a good social networking application should ultimately help you in "real" life. Facebook helps me stay connected with my far-flung friends and family; as a writer, I find that LinkedIn helps me keep in touch with people I've worked with and sometimes generate some work; and Twitter is just a fun way to easily communicate with friends and share links, etc.

I just jumped onto facebook about 2-3 months ago and I love it. I was a myspace user pretty much from the beginning. It just seems that my world, my friends are all on facebook now. I am also on LinkedIn, but that just for career purposes.

Here's my theory, I think everyone needs 3 networking sites and only 3. You need your Social Networking for friends and wasting time at work. You need a professional networking for career purposes. And, the third is a niche networking based upon your passions or interests. If you like cars, get involved in automotive networing. If it's cooking, find a site that connects with with other chefs. For me it's conversantlife.com. I love connecting with others who share that passion for faith and entertainment, social justice, politics, etc for His glory.

I belong to Facebook and Linkedin. Facebook seems to be pretty effective as a way to connect people, and I've found some people (including some relatives!) I haven't been in touch with for a while. But I haven't yet been motivated to check my profile more than once a day. I'm still getting to know Linkedin. I suspect that when I do, I'll be using that one more for business contacts.

I belong to MySpace, LinkedIn, Facebook, Xanga, ShoutLife, Xianz, and GodTube. I love GodTube for the videos. I'm on Facebook the most. All my friends joined MySpace when it was big, then people started moving over to Facebook and now almost everyone I know is on Facebook as that seems to be more popular now. I'm hardly ever on MySpace anymore even though I still have an account. I use ShoutLife for their video chat rooms.

I love Facebook cuz you can connect with people you know and keep up with what's going on in their life. I like the news feeds. I also like the mobile app and I use it. All my friends status updates gets texted to my phone. I figure since I have an unlimited text plan, I might as well use it.

I'm a pretty big technology geek. I love Apple computers, iPods, anything shiny :) But I have not really connected to the social networking online scene. I have a Myspace that I haven't visited or updated in about a year. I have a Facebook that I mostly hate because I get annoying messages a requests from people to add new applications or "be a fan" of someone/something. I also get "friend requests" from people I rarely, if ever, talk to in real life. I don't understand why there is a need to "be friends" with someone on a social networking site if I'm not your friend in real life? But I feel guilty for pushing the "ignore" button too many times, so I "accept" and then I have hundreds of friends sending dozens of requests every day.
I tend to use to email to network with the people I care about in real life. It is much quicker, allows for more text, and because I use gmail, it cuts out the biggest annoying feature of all social networking sites: excessive advertising. Even though I put on all of my profiles that I'm married, sites like Myspace and Facebook continually advertise dating networks (with suggestive pictures of women) and I get tired of it really quick.
Lately I prefer to "network" through blogsites - visiting the sites of those who leave posts and learning about their life. To me, there is more valuable information shared this way than through other social networking sites.
So mark me down for "none of the above."

Technology is a core thread in my life. It has the capacity to either invigorate a conversation or pretty much kill it-especially in church circles. I'm here to explore in a fun way the role technology can play in the faith community.
