Tonight, two of my kids went to bed hungry by their own choice. Two of my kids complained. Two of my kids got in trouble and went to bed early. A few minutes ago, one of them got up and told me, "Dad, I'm Starving." I explained to her how blessed we are, and that this is one of the reasons that mom and I will not tollerate complaints about food. I explained that we have so much, and that there are starving children in the world that literally have not enough to eat. She asked for pictures. Here are a couple of them I found quickly on google. My daughters face hard with stubbornness quickly changed to a face of compassion. She began to ask questions. The first one was, "why don't their parents just get them some food, or go hunt for some?" I tried to explain, but words seem futile while looking at these pictures. She went on to ask more questions about the inequality of food distribution.
Beyond measure we are blessed. |

Your kids are amazing. I know I only know Zoe and Addy, but they are brilliant and I'm blown away at the compassion that Ms. Zoe started to understand (I'm guessing it's her based on the age). You're a great dad bro, and I can't wait to have conversations like this with Karleigh!

Zach, yes it was Zoe. She is an amazing kid, it's true (I'm not biased in the least).
As a follow up, we decided that the two complainers and myself would eat only rice and beans today (in fairly small portions compared to what we usually eat). No snacks (except another small portion of rice and beans), and no hot-coco (which they get sometimes in the AM). We have shown them a bunch of stuff on the internet about poverty, and they wanted to do something about it, so we are now sponsoring a compassion child, as of this morning.
I say none of this to build us up, but to say that we are blessed to provide our kids with a learning moment today, one they will hopefully remember. Their attitudes have changed after showing them how others in the world eat. It has been a very good thing.
I pray that we do not take for granted how rich we really are. I also pray that we learn to share the wealth that we have to bless others.
