Slavery in America: Some Helpful Websites

When I first began writing about human trafficking and modern day slavery back in January, I expected to be done with the series after about a month, maybe two. Yet here we are a few months later and I am still uncovering more information from this multi-layered, international issue. Although I've provided links to a number of organizations throughout the series, I thought it might be helpful to list some of them here in one blog. These are not in any particular order and I've simply included the mission or vision statement of each site.

Just One is a non-profit organization that was formed to stimulate greater global awareness about extreme poverty, and to provoke compassionate ideas and intelligent giving in order to provide sustainable relief. We are a collective voice for the victims of social injustice––the one(s) living in geographical and situational poverty; the one(s) orphaned through death, disease and desertion; the one(s) trafficked into slavery throughout the world.

World Team Foundation exists to change lives and transform societies by investing in at-risk-children, youth and enslaved women.

Stop the Traffik is a growing global movement of individuals, communities and organizations fighting to PREVENT the sale of people, PROTECT the trafficked and PROSECUTE the traffickers.

Free the Slaves liberates slaves around the world, helps them rebuild their lives and researches real world solutions to eradicate slavery forever. We use world class research and compelling stories from the frontlines of slavery to convince the powerful and the powerless that we can end slavery.

Sex and Money A National Search for Human Worth is a feature length film that documents a group of students as they travel in an RV across the United States, seeking to understand how the sexual exploitation of children has become the nation's fasting growing form of organized crime. As the students encounter the brave men and women who are fighting on the front lines of the modern abolitionist movement, they begin to consider what further action can be taken to bring an end to such obscene forms of injustice.

The Sold Project Our mission is to prevent child prostitution through culturally relevant programs for vulnerable children and to share their stories to empower creative, compassionate people to act.

International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.

Polaris Project is committed to combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery, and to strengthening the anti-trafficking movement through a comprehensive approach. The work of Polaris Project is grounded in a set of values and organizational beliefs that provide a common starting point for all programmatic activities.  All staff and volunteers strive to embody and model these values within the Polaris community and in the anti-trafficking field.

Look Beneath the Surface is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. ATIP leads the HHS Rescue and Restore Victims of Human Trafficking public awareness campaign, which established Rescue and Restore coalitions in 24 cities, regions and States. These community action groups are comprised of NGO leaders, academics, students, law enforcement agents, and other key stakeholders who are committed to addressing the problem of human trafficking in their own communities.

These are just a handful of the sites that I've learned from. We can end slavery in America and overseas. Check out one or all of these sites and let me know what you think. There are dozens of groups and churches working hard to end slavery today. What websites have you discovered that might also be helpful in learning more about modern day slavery and working to end it?

I drink coffee, read books, and travel. I’ve been able to drink coffee and discuss books with friends all over the world, simply because someone built a bridge and I made it east of the Mississippi and beyond. For this reason, I love bridges.
