Ending Slavery this Fall

This fall season is heavy with activities to help justice weave its way through the dark alleys of injustice. It’s an exciting time for those who labor away rescuing the worlds enslaved. It’s hard to imagine that there are over 27 million people enslaved in today’s world. It’s hard to imagine that this number is the highest our worlds ever known. It’s hard to imagine that in our lifetime, the demand for people is at an all time high.

This fall there are two major events taking place in this movement to usher in freedom. The Freedom Awards are coming to Los Angeles, California on October 13th. The Freedom Awards will be honoring the heroes of the anti-slavery movement from around the world. There will be a host of presenters including actress Demi Moore. Organization, Free the Slaves will be the host. To check out more about the event, head to their home page and see how you can participate. If you aren’t in the LA area and are unable to go, there are several ways you can be involved with the movement which you can discover by exploring the website.

The second event taking place this fall is one that IJM is hosting. This event can take place at a local community center, your home church or even in your living room. IJM recently published a 30 minute informative documentary on the topic of slavery. They are providing host kits for those groups who would like to join the cause of abolishing slavery. They’ve made it incredibly easy for people like you and me to receive the documentary and host a screening.

Eugene Cho posted a fantastic blog recently on the issue and his church is hosting a screening and accepting the call to act. I think it’s great. No matter what state or country you are in, you can do the same. Get all the details here, including a view of the trailer.

I’ve been reading through the book of Amos lately and am convinced the issue of abolishing slavery is a Kingdom issue. As followers of Christ and family members of God's, we are compelled to speak for the voiceless and act for the helpless. I’m excited to see the chains come off and freedom become a reality in the lives of the 27 million. I believe we can abolish slavery. I believe William Wilberforce’s work was not in vain and I believe this generation today has the drive and the passion that he had to lessen the demand for humans and increase the demand for justice.

I’d love to know if you plan on attending the Freedom Awards and/or host or participate in a screening of the film.  Let me know also if you are involved in this movement and in what capacity. It’d be great to hear your stories of Micah 6:8 in action.
