I bought this book because the title reflects basically what I have been saying most of my life about Christians...the crazy one's, that is. This book is not saying that ALL Christians are bad, per-se; but SOME of them have taken their beliefs a bit too far and have remained in the dark ages still reciting the old testament but not practicing what they preach; and this book does an excellent job of putting those "crazies" in their place. I didn't find this book necessarily "hysterical" as other reviewers did, but it is rather practical and not an embarrassment to Christianity. I am also not angry or upset by the points made in this book because they are dead-on.
One point the author(s) make is in the beginning of the book they point out the "nutcase Christian" sitting in the bleachers at a basketball game with the rainbow clown wig on holding a sign that simply reads "John 3:16" and they ask "who in the non-Christian world is going to run to their bible and look that up?" good point, since non-Christians are not going to have a bible readily available; however, if you [the author of this book] saw that sign, then there is a good chance that a lot of others saw it too and probably out of their own curiosity did look it up. And what if that one line in the bible that confirms God's love for us all and His belief that we are so worthy of that love that He gave up His beloved son to save our souls, changed a non-believers life? There is a possibility. It is a shame, however, that only Christians are aware of the next verse, John 3:17 "For God did not send his only Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it". Yet some Christians are still so very judgmental. Non-believers are very judgmental too, but Christians should know better!
But I do have to agree totally on the fact that we are seeing a rise in non-Christians shouting "shut up already, I don't care" because Christianity has been shoved in everyone's face for decades and people have heard "fire and brimstone awaits you if you don't change your evil ways and be a good pious Christian". I think we are hitting a time where people are seeing that being a Christian is not what it is cracked up to be [because let's face it, a lot of Christians have been very bad role-models, like Pedophiles masquerading as priests] and they are shouting "enough is enough, already!" but then again, I also don't want to hear monkey's like Tom Cruise spouting off about his Scientology garbage, either! So if society wants Christians to shut up, then everybody has to shut up! Fair is fair! This book also touches on a lot of razor-sharp subjects that Christians and non-Christians alike do not like to discuss [or they discuss, but not without blood-shed] such as God vs. Science, State & Religion, and my favorite, the televangelists who shout "give me your life savings and I will put in a good word for you to God!" (better known as the prosperity gospel - or "crock of crap" ) The chapter that talks about Science and God is worth the price of the book alone! They also make a few references about how intelligent Jesus was at a time where everybody who hated him wanted to trap him but he was too smart to fall for it and turned their deception back on them. Jesus is a magnificent being, but the majority of people don't see him that way because some Christians have made him out to be a kook! Another well delivered point is how the fanatical Christians are to blame for creating atheists! Think about that!
I for one do not shove my beliefs down anybody's throat; if they want to talk to me about my beliefs then I will explain it to the best of my ability; am I the best source to ask about God? Absolutely not! But I know what I believe and it is simple; I believe in God, the Son and the Holy Spirit and that they are a part of ALL of us, I believe that humans are very spiritual beings and that after this life is a spiritual life that will be eternal. If you believe that too, that's great; if you don't, that's great! If you believe some variation of that, fine! But this book talks about the other side of that coin where you have some Christians giving Christianity a bad name because they do bad deeds and then hide behind God, thereby making God look like a kook and you have to admit that if we make God look bad, then being a Christian is not going to look very enticing. That is the premise behind this book - at least this is what I got out of it. Making Christians realize how fanatical they have been and how they lost sight of the REAL meaning of being a Christian. You can't slam somebody up against a wall and MAKE them believe in God. You sit back and let God mold your life...be confident that He is at the helm and revel in His miracles because for those who oppose science, you will be glad to know that God has made science work for Him in the fact that science has confirmed that there was indeed a beginning to the earth and the universe which is what God told us already in Genesis 1:1. But that triumph is God's, not ours...so don't get too cocky! This book also does an awesome job in explaining the controversial verse "God created the heavens and the earth in six days". Everyone will be pleasantly surprised (and appeased) by the explanation that is given. That one sentence is a huge stumbling block for non-believers and the author(s) did a good job putting that in perspective.
There is mention of a horrific homicide that happened in the South regarding a young man who was a homosexual; he was beaten and hung from a tree by people claming to be Christians. Even though he was found still clinging to life, he later died from those injuries. And his family and loved ones had to endure Christians picketing his funeral route with signs that were not very loving and kind. I for one believe that young man is in the arms of a loving God who does not blame him for the mistakes he made. I can only hope that God will be as merciful to those who murdered him. I don't presume to speak for God, but I do speak as someone with a human heart and a conscience when I say that was NOT a Christian act. These are the Christians who give the rest of us a bad name and make God look like a murderer! That is just one example why non-Christians want NOTHING to do with Christianity, and you can't really blame them. We have to make being a Christian look as good as God intends it to be; as good as we know it is! Then non-Christians will flock to God.
I don't go to church, yet I consider myself a Christian; why don't I go to church? Because I believe that church is full of hypocrites and gossipmongers! The Pastor stands behind the pulpit preaching about poisoning the temple of God (your body) with cigarettes, yet half the Deacons and congregation can't wait to go outside after service and light up! But I digress...a GOOD Christian is being a beacon of God's love and grace so others will recognize that and approach you; then you can share with them how they can have a peaceful soul with a heart filled with God's love and let them make the choice. Otherwise, Christians will continue to be mocked and shamed every time some zealot lashes out with hatred in the name of God and Christianity. Let's endeavor to be the generation that brings love, honesty and dignity to the Christian faith.
