While I was doing my internship a couple of summers ago, I was put in charge for one night for the junior high service. Lead the music, then turn around and speak. What I did instead, may have changed my life forever. After the music set, I had everyone go to these tables that I had set up with pens and paper ready to write. I told them that we were going to write a song together. I told them to write down what their response would be if Jesus were to walk in the room at that very instant. Of course with junior high students we got some pretty silly responses: “Holy Mother of God! (I used to be Catholic…)”; “La, la, la, O Praise Him”… But then I read one 8th grade girl’s in particular, and it blew me away. “You know the secrets of our hearts, and your love still lingers there”. That set the tone for the whole song. As responses kept pouring in, I pieced the song together right then and there. I couldn’t wait to worship with these kids singing this song.
