Against All Odds
created on Thu, 09/04/2008 - 16:19

This is a good friend of mine, Manita. She is from Thailand and probably one of the strongest people I know. She is one Christian among about 94.6 percent of Buddhists in her country. While I was in Thailand, it was very apparent that those who have turned away from their Buddhist traditions, like Manita, are to an extent abandoned by their families. It is such a novel concept for people there to consider the fact that there is a Creator of the Universe that cares so deeply for them and desires nothing more than to be in fellowship with them. Culturally, there is a sense of depression among the Thai people wherever you seem to go. Suicide rates are sky high, mostly because they are not able to meet the demands of their family, work or school. But one thing that I absolutely admire in those who are living Christ-like lives in Thailand is the fact they strongly desire to stick to the truth of the matter. They love because they have been loved. They believe because they have heard the call. They serve because they desire others to know the joy they know. They do not condemn those who do not know-instead they present themselves as a safe haven among all people. My prayer would be that they stay pure at heart as far as 'religion' goes. I pray that it doesn't become like our western thoughts of theology where it becomes about doctrinal statements instead of the love and gift that has been provided to us. Childlike faith-they get it.

What a great story and a great image.

Jessica, you have an amazing gift! Your photo captures a story. Thank you for sharing. Wouldn't it be great to return to the simplicity of the Gospel? We have two extremes. One, Judgement and Hell fire, the other, anything goes, its all about love. We need to restore balance in the church. I have a feeling your friend here has it.

God Bless you--keep sharing!

A beautiful image, Jessica. Part of the power is in the subject, but your skill as a photographer enhanced Manita's inner beauty, giving it an ethereal quality. As much as I like the image, I find your description to be an important part of the art. Thank you for this gift.

I love the simplicity with which this image conveys beauty and strength. Makes me think of Jesus.
