PASTE has been such a refreshing alternative to Rolling Stone and Spin. It consistently delivers insightful interviews and previews of upcoming releases. Each issue also arrives with a CD loaded with intriguing tracks from people like Iron & Wine and The National. But as a champion of independent artists, they’ve taken a big hit in the economic downturn. Frankly, the rise of illegal downloading (and the shrinking budget of record companies) has zapped all music publications. So now, it is our turn, as readers and fans to keep Paste afloat. As always, they’re offering an amazing deal. Donate to Paste and score 75 downloads of rare tracks from artists like She & Him, the Jayhawks, Of Montreal, The Avett Brothers, and Over the Rhine. That is a sweet deal and chance to a rescue a quality publication. My partner on Purple State of Mind has already lamented the end of No Depression magazine. I don’t want to write a mournful obit for Paste. So join me, in donating now! |

Are they really in trouble? I've been working with one of their founders hoping to maybe get some articles in there. They seem to have a killer website. 250K uniques I think. I know they did the whole fair-trade model where you can pay whatever you want for a yearly subscription. So people started paying $1 for in stead of $25 for a subscription. Do you think that's whats hurting them? I'll admit, I sprang for the dollar rather than the twenty five dollar deal.

Subscriptions will almost never cover a magazine's costs. Advertising revenue has completely collapsed. Just look at the page count between recent issues of Paste and those from a year ago. Music companies have simply stopped advertising. No money around for promotion. And yet the costs of printing and mailing have continued to rise. When one money-losing month is followed by two or three more money losing months, suddenly it gets tough to pay the printer, the post office, and your freelance writers...despite an enthusiastic audience, broad subscriber base, and dynamic website.
This really is my very first time I visit here. I discovered so numerous fascinating stuff in your weblog particularly its discussion. From the plenty of comments on your content articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment right here!
