Okay, I admit it, I was pretty happy that the centerpiece of the current reign of terror was ushered into the netherworld. That it was at the hands of a Navy Seal, a well-placed missile or by falling down the stairs would not have made a whole lot of difference to me. I am just relieved to know that there is one less misguided mind plotting horrific acts of murder. That he was eliminated does not trouble me a whole lot. Like C.S. Lewis, I subscribe to the principle of “just desserts”. And I know that this confession will have a lot of my tenderhearted friends in the blogesphere howling in disbelief and digging around for scriptures to quote. “How can you possibly match Christ’s demand that we “love our enemies” with the action of unloading lead into their skull?” they shall ask. I may be very alone in this thought, but I have no problem believing that one can love another human being with all the depth of Christ’s love and at the same time pull the trigger on him (or perhaps her). To get to this conclusion all I have to do is to think… about my own self. I think it is fair to say that I love myself. But…if for some reason I became so dark and so demented that I plotted and carried out the murder of thousands of innocent people I would consider it an act of love if someone put a bullet through my brain. I would welcome, even at the cost of my life, someone stopping me from getting more blood on my hands. I can see how they could hunt me down and put an end to me in pure love for me and for those who I may harm if I were allowed to continue. But I can only say this because I am not that dark and demented. It would be something like Old Yeller. “Old Yeller” was a syrupy Disney film made in the late 50’s about a wonderful dog that, in the process of saving his master from a rabid animal, was bit and contracted rabies himself. The heart wrenching part of the movie for me as a kid was watching the dilemma of this beloved and heroic dog, now reduced to a snarling, foaming and crazed animal, being shot to death by his loved one. Sadly, some human beings, if not quite Old Yeller noble, were once sweet children or goofy teenagers who have, in adulthood, become rabid with evil. Hitler who reportedly was kind to animals and his personal staff had a severe case of rabid evil. Ditto for Stalin and a host of others whose lives demonstrated cruel homicidal insanity and who were responsible for the carnage of innocent humans on a massive scale. Few would have winced if they came to an abrupt and premature end. Old Yeller comes to mind not only for the big mass murdering types. It comes into play with the friend who it turns out is cheating on his wife and pleads with me to keep quiet or even worse to somehow affirm him because he has: a. Suddenly found his true soul mate b. Is finally joyously happy c. And has come to the conclusion that all of this is somehow okay with God (because of course God wants him to be happy) Nope. My pal is rabid with sin. He isn’t making any sense, his logic is foaming with contradiction, nonsense and wishful thinking. Off I go straight to his wife. I will put a big hole of truth into the middle of this tryst knowing full well that I may lose his friendship, cause his secret happy world to implode and set the stage for exceptional pain all around. I spill the beans because of love, for him, for his wife and for the other woman. But I do it knowing that it will hurt and maybe kill relationships. And I do it knowing that if I found myself in the same situation as my friend, it would be an act of love for me to be ratted out. But in the end, my philandering friend is dealing in the minor leagues of cold heartedness. I remember as a six-year-old kid crying because they had to shoot Old Yeller. Even then I knew it had to be done. But then Old Yeller had given his life to save the family and he deserved my childhood tears. Architects of mass murder who are extinguished merely get a deep glad sigh of relief at their passing…or maybe even a burst of joy. |

Spot on, Rick.
I remember trying to hide my tears (boys don’t cry) when reaching the end of Old Yeller in 5th grade, reading ahead while the class was doing some assignment or other.
I appreciate your perspective here on what love really means. I would have argued that for a Christian revenge (as opposed to the mandated forgiveness) is something different than justice meted out by a government, or the casualties of war (as seen in Bin Laden’s case). But when I read your big-picture description of a Christian response, I found it thought-provoking and helpful.
When I first heard that Bin Laden had been killed, I know that there would be lots of whoops because we’d finally gotten the “bad” guy. And there were. Ding-Dong the Wicked Terrorist is Dead! Then I thought, how like us as human beings. It’s only the really really bad guys that deserve anything. Bin Laden. Hitler. Guys like that. How we love to compare ourselves to them, and then we feel pretty good. We conveniently avoid comparing ourselves instead to God’s holiness, the only standard that really matters in the universe.
Yikes. I don’t measure up, either.
We don’t like to think about how crummy and sinful we are, and that our “little” (only from a human perspective) sins prove us to be just as lost as Bin Laden. Just as much NOT children of God by (natural) birth. Just as much in need of a savior.
A Savior. Christ died for me, just as much as he died for Osama.
God died for me. Now THAT’s something to whoop about.
I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
JC also said turn the other cheek. To think that you can make the world a better place by killing someone is a selfish thought. it's what they tell marines to brainwash them into killing people they've never met. If you believe in God then you should accept that this world and the people He's put in it. Killing is so old testament...
Turn the other cheek... Is that what you do when someone is threatening and hurting your wife or child?
Our military is to protect - self-defense.
I do not celebrate any death, except of those being promoted to Heaven. We do have a law, do not murder. There are consequences to breaking the law.
Jesus didn't have a wife or child...maybe that's why it was so easy for him to say that. If you think that committing a sin to protect yourself is OK, you might want to read the Bible some more. The Bible says we all will face judgment and if Abraham was prepared to kill his own son for God, why shouldn't we all, right? Would you interpret that as God threatening your child and would therefore try to protect with self-defense? It's a bit hypocritical.
And to think we haven't unjustly killed anyone during this war on terrorism is ridiculous...are there no consequences to our actions?
"Jesus didn't have a wife or child...maybe that's why it was so easy for him to say that."
Of course, this would mean that Jesus was speaking only out of His own experience and not offering us the God-breathed words given to Him. In other words, maybe it was easy for Him to say it because God gave Him the words to say.
well, some good old thing we just bury in our mind deeply.
Criticism of the shooting of the mortal enemy of the western world comes from confusing biblical descriptions of God's calling for individual Christians with the role that God gives to government. While Romans 11 tells believers to bless those who persecute them, while Romans 13 states that government is an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. These statements are a few verses apart. Paul isn't bipolar, but recognizes God's calling for the distinct roles involved. The US Navy Seals were carrying out their God-given role as an avenger of God's wrath.
All of heaven is going to rejoice (Rev. 19:1-5) in the destruction of Babylon and its people, because their moral corruption ruined the earth and slaughtered saints. The Lord Himself will engage in a bloody carnage of the enemies of His people. (Rev. 14:17-20, 19:15.) While we have all offended a holy God and we all deserve His judgment, those who have been cloaked in His salvation are precious, so that precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of His saints.
Six World Vision aid workers were killed by Al Qaeda about 35 miles from where bin Laden was killed. They were killed solely for their faith, and despite their service to people in need. Christians are killed every day in the Muslim world by similar fanatics. Their blood is crying out to the Lord for justice. (See Gen. 4:10 and 18:7.) Like many others in this world, bin Laden has his opportunity to hear and receive the gospel, but he rejected it, making himself a vicious enemy of the church and aligning himself with the prince of this world. I can't feel any sympathy for him, just as I will not feel sympathy for the death of the Antichrist or for Satan when he is finally thrown into the Lake of Fire. There was nothing unfair or unjust about bin Laden's end in this world. It was just a small taste, though, of God's judgment to come, the fire of which will never, ever be quenched. We should want to save as many people as possible from such an end.
Gen. 9:6 - "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man."
OBL was a terrorist in the true sense of the term. He enjoyed killing civilians, people who were not in a war, not in a battle, but simply targets of convenience in order to foster "terror." Scripture recognizes the right of a government whose citizens have been so targeted to shed the blood of such a man. While it would have been great to see him come to love the true God through Jesus Christ, that unlikely potentiality is not a reason to refrain from taking him out. Such thinking would lead to a world where no one had a right to use force to stand against the Hitlers and Stalins and Idi Amins and OBLs of this world.
Aren't we all God's children? I don't think it makes Him happy when anyone is killed, but I could be wrong.
We are all God's children, but death isn't the worst evil--we are taught to fear the one who can steal our souls. Death is just a door into eternity.
Love demands justice. Biblical love is not an emotion, but by definition is "doing what is best for the other person." I agree with Pastor Rick, in the case of OBL, the most loving thing to do for him was remove him from himself. This does not violate Jesus' command of "turn the other cheek," because Jesus was talking about personal moral actions, it is clear that Biblically,(Rom. 13) justice is to be carried out by the government in the goal of limiting the spread of wickedness on this earth.
Who is the guilty man? In John 8:3-4 The Pharisees hoped to entrap Jesus with the law, Leviticus 20:20, Deut 22:22 commands that adulterers be stoned to death. Amazing Jesus manages to affirm the Torah in principle while undermining it in practice.
"Let anyone who is without sin cast the first stone". Sinners deserve death he said in this anwser - but only a sinless person is qualified to carry out such a sentence. Since we are all sinners - (some more transparent than others) I think this teaching applies to all accused sinners and their accusers and if prior biblical commands to carry out capital punishment should ever be obeyed. Jesus changed everything, and everything changes with him.
I think everyone is missing the point except me (I say halfway joking). But Old Yeller is not a soul destined for heaven or hell. That movie "All Dogs Go To Heaven", not real. "Ratting out" your friend for cheating, again, does not result immediately in heaven or hell for him or anyone else involved. My heart actually hurt knowing that UBL's soul was doomed for all eternity the moment that lead penatrated his evil brain.
On the other hand, it was not evil repaying evil in the elimination of UBL. I may be wrong, but I believe when he orchestrated the 911 attacks, he declared war between himself (and his evil regime) and the United States and anyone else he has attacked. When you declare war, especially on innocent unarmed people, you need to be eliminated. "Turn the other cheek" does not apply in this situation. This is protecting the innocent, some who still need to experience salvation. This is war on terrorism, and UBL declared it.
Great article Rick, and my sentiments exactly. It's one of those things that make the world hold Christians in such contempt, when the religiosity of their enculturised opinions bleeds over into such a complex and highly charged subject.
It's true that Christ died for sinners, and that all of us are the biggest sinner around. However, it's also true that there are just wars to be fought and if people who will never be in the position to make such difficult choices as when to dispose of a megalomaniac who is killing husbands, wives and children all over the world, don't understand that, then it's good that they're not in the decision making roles. If they were, we may just as well all roll over and play dead in the name of Christ, and let whomever wishes, come into our worlds and violate us in whatever way they choose. Piffle!
I'd like to see how much some of those people would change their opinion when their own family's safety is challenged.
OBL had a destiny in Christ and God loved him and would have wanted him to be His son. OBL made his own choices that obliterated God's plan for him. The fallout from that is just another example of how our world is so broken because people don't love their Creator as He loves us.
Thanks Rick for having the courage to take a stand that might not be without controversy.
Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant, Aloha!
