Great question Larry. The answer is that our attitude towards the modern nation-state Israel should not necessarily be any different from our attitude towards any other nation.

The modern nation-state of Israel is not the apple of God's eye. Christ is.

Just as the Old Testament sacrificial system was a shadow of Christ's sacrifice, the nation of Israel was a shadow of the church, the spiritual kingdom of God. Now that Christ has come, we no longer look to the shadow, but to the reality.

In Romans 2 Paul says that "For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter." (28-29)

In Romans 9, Paul explains that "... not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring." (6-8)

Then again in Galatians 3, Paul further develops this when he explains "Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, 'And to offsprings,' referring to many, but referring to one, 'And to your offspring,' who is Christ... in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise" (16, 26-29)

He finishes his letter with this:
"For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God." (6:15-16).
The true Israel of God is the bride of Christ, His church.

Scripture teaches that the nation of Israel no longer serves any purpose. It was a shadow of Christ and Christ has fulfilled its purpose. We are no longer to distinguish amongst each other as Jew or Gentile, but as brothers and sisters in Christ.
