Yesterday, BBC News Magazine ran an article about a nine-year-old boy who wrote in to a BBC children's program 35 years ago, telling them that he had a "strange" belief that he would someday know how to save people's lives. This boy did, indeed, go on to become a doctor whose groundbreaking research has saved lives. (Read the full article here...) This article got me thinking about my own childhood dreams, and I wondered - how many of you knew at the age of nine what you wanted to be? And how many of you have become that? I started playing piano at a very young age (see picture). My parents swear that when I was less than a year old, I could plunk out a recognizable melody of "The First Noel"by ear (my dad used to sing it every time we drove past the post office at the corner of Fisher Ct. and Main St. in Clawson, MI, where I lived for the first seven years of my life, at Christmastime. There was a big "NOEL" sign hanging in front.) By the time I was twelve, I was writing a lot of songs and already performing a lot.Today, playing piano and singing is a huge part of my life as a worship leader and performing artist (see other picture).
But by the time I was 12, I had narrowed it down a bit: I wanted to be a star of stage and screen. At 12, I began my acting career in a community theatre production, and that same year I recorded a demo tape of three songs I wrote. By the time I was 13, I had already learned some hard lessons about the entertainment industry, but I took it all in stride (some tears notwithstanding) and by 16, I was acting, singing and dancing in professional theatres, shopping malls (think "Tiffany"), coffee shops and churches. When I stopped pursuing my "stage and screen" career seven years ago, I had loads of regional theatre, New York theatre, television (bit parts), film (even bittier parts) and industrial film (big parts) credits (if you're curious, you can see my resume here). I still love to perform, but my focus has changed, and now I focus more on writing, culturemaking (through my work with International Arts Movement) and ministry, but all of my years in entertainment are still very much a part of what I do today. All of this is to say, how about you? What did you want to be when you were a child? Did you become that? |

Hmmmm... I've wanted to be a dentist, lawyer, pharmacist and journalist at various times in my life. I've also wanted to get an advanced degree in Psychology, which is something I think I may revisit at some point. I've been thinking about it a lot of late, so this post is kind of timely for me.
Funny thing is, I've worked as a Drug Counselor and Technical Recruiter, neither of which I would have chosen as my profession. You just never know where you're going to wind up, do you?
I think you're on to something with the psych path. You have a lot of good insights there, and I'm sure that more education and experience would only help give you more direction. I say, go for it!!
I recognize that I'm an outlier (perhaps to the point of being a little weird), but all I ever wanted to be from the time I was six or seven was either a doctor or a preacher. Those fused together to be a missionary surgeon from '79-'85 in Yemen, then later a (sometimes) preaching and teaching elder in a church here in Fresno as I continued to work full time as a surgeon. Since 2003 I've spent a total of four months doing volunteer work (surgery) in mission hospitals and am scheduled to go to Gabon for the month of February '09, see www.xanga.com/dvyfacs for details.

Thanks Doc! I know a lot of kids who will say they want to be a doctor... but then the reality of 8 years of higher education, followed by even more years in residency, has knocked them off their career goals. I admire that you not only fulfilled your childhood dream, but did it in such a worthy, life-giving way. Thanks for writing!
What a neat story. Actually the Noel sign referred to was on the Clawson City Hall. There was also a nativity scene. As I recall, the city council had decided to defy political correctness and simply put the displays up. Then they waited to see if anyone would complain. When someone did they simply added a Santa in his sleigh.
Hi Dad! Thanks for reading, and for clarifying the details - you remember better than I do! Hilarious about Santa. That'll show 'em.
I have always aspired to be a movie star. But some other major career paths I seriously considered growing up were Lawyer & politician or dancer.
I grew up and didn't want to continue with that much school so being a lawyer was out of the question. I did a little acting growing up, but pursued sports more.
Now in my mid twenties I am pursuing the start of my own ministry for teens fusing my passions of performance art, sports and multimedia.
So in a round about way yes I am finally pursuing my little girl dreams. ;)
Awesome, Chan! God doesn't put those little girl dreams in us for nothing! Keep pressing on with your calling.
I wanted to be a pro baseball player when I was a kid...then a high school band director. Having failed at that in college, God had a better plan and called me into ministry! Christy, I will never forget that it was your mom who first mentioned the ridiculous idea! But God was certainly speaking through her. Who knew?
That is SO cool Opie! Who knew my mom was a prophet :-)
