THE BIBLE and the Bible

THE BIBLE is a huge hit. The Bible, not so much.

THE BIBLE, of course, is the recently aired mini-series that captured record ratings on cable television’s The History Channel. Produced by reality show guru Mark Burnett and his wife and former angel, Roma Downey, the five episodes that collectively covered the sweep of human history as recorded in the Bible were viewed by 100 million people. That’s astounding.

By comparison, the Bible, known by many as the Holy Bible, is the actual book you have in your home. To be completely accurate, if you’re an American, there’s an 88 percent chance you own at least one Bible. There’s only one problem. If you read it at all, you’re likely reading it just four times a year or less. That’s embarrassing.

Wisecracking Foxworthy, charities team up for Bible Challenge

No, this is not like any game show you’ve ever seen. The contestants pray. A Gospel choir breaks into hallelujahs at commercial breaks. The host, comedian Jeff Foxworthy quips “You know, if your church is also a skating rink, you just might be a redneck.”

In the premiere episode of the American Bible Challenge, airing Thursday night, August 23 at 8 p.m. EDT, on the Games Show Network, the first three teams of 18 are introduced – and go head-to-head in competition for $20,000 that the competitors don’t even get to keep.

Thursday night, viewers will meet “The Suburban Saints,” from Sacramento, California – whose members include local deputy sheriff Ron Milton, insurance salesman Ned Schaut and TV/film producer Rick Borba. What do they have in common? They are Bible study buddies.  Ron is a Purple Heart Iraq War vet who volunteers in prison ministry; Ned wants to build a skate park to minister to teens; and Ricky hopes to make films and TV shows reflecting Christian values – but without any sermons. If they win this round, they will earn $20,000 for City Crossroads, a non-profit serving the Sacramento community.

Welcome to The Way

Now that you’re here, you’re probably asking, “What is The Way?” Is it a book? A bunch of Jesus freaks? Hippies trying to make a comeback after 40 years of wandering?

For starters, The Way is a Bible. But not that type of Bible. The Way started out as a groovy, counter-culture Bible in the early ‘70’s. It wasn’t the straight laced, black-type, burgundy-covered piece of arm candy that you carried to church every Sunday. It was a Bible that, for the first time, offered honest reflections and stories from real people right next to the Bible text.

Millions of teens and twenty-something’s had their copy. Just ask around.

And that’s exactly what The Way is now. Everything’s different inside, but the idea is the same. It’s a place to come in, and a place to go out.

Hear the Voice

David Capes is the Thomas Nelson Research Professor at Houston Baptist University. He is the author of numerous publications and is one of the top scholars and writers for The Voice, a new Bible translation that reads like a story with all of the truth and wisdom of God's Word. To illustrate how The Voice transports the reader into the Bible's narrative, Dr. Capes shows how the Bible's first verse reads in this new dynamic rendering of Scripture compared to a more traditional Bible version.

Here is Genesis 1:1 in the King James Version:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

That is a brilliant, simple, accurate translation of the Hebrew.  As we thought about our intended audience, however, it dawned on us how different the word “heavens” and “earth” are for us today compared to the ancients.

Take Action Bible

Last year ConversantLife is partnered with Thomas Nelson, Inc. and World Vision in a unique and biblical campaign called "God's Word in Action." Through this comprehensive campaign, Thomas Nelson's Bible Group pledged $100,000 to World Vision to help eradicate poverty and preventable deaths among children.

As a follow up to this inspiring campaign, Thomas Nelson has introduced the Take Action Bible as a way to encourage everyday people and families to put their own faith into action by serving Jesus somwhere in the world, whether it's at home or abroad.

"If you had asked me a year ago if I would travel to a third world country to build a home for someone who did not have a home, my answer would have been, 'Not right now.' Ask me that same question today,  and my answer would be, 'Absoluely yes.'" Such is the dynamic testimony of Jason and Lisa, who traveled with seven friends to Haiti, where they built two homes in connection with a local church.

God's Word in Action

ConversantLife is excited to partner with Thomas Nelson, Inc. and World Vision in a unique and biblical campaign called "God's Word in Action." Through this comprehensive campaign, Thomas Nelson's Bible Group is donating at least $100,000 through March 2012 to World Vision to help eradicate poverty and preventable deaths among children.

At ConversantLife, we're all about content that encourages conversations about faith and culture. So when we heard about a leading Bible publisher teaming with the world's largest relief organization, we immediately wanted to be involved. The way we see it, the Bible contains life's most important content, and helping "the least of these" is at the heart of the gospel message.
