Seriously Dude, Steroids?

OK, I am not a huge sports fan, but when I looked at the news today, it was impossible not to see the news about Manny Ramirez.  When I read this article on espn.com I couldn't help but ask a couple questions.  I mean seriously, steroids?  Why?  This guy is the highest paid(or one of them) in Major League Baseball, and the Dodgers fought so hard to get him, and he screws it all up with this.

To be honest, I have an incredibly hard time with the sheer ammount of money that this guy is paid for playing a sport.  I also have a problem with the fact that he arrogantly held out for so long trying to negotiate for a higher salary.  Personally, I wish things were different in professional sports, and that there were some sort of salary cap.  However, I don't make the rules, and I don't really expect things will get changed.

But I guess that is a different issue.  At present, I have a very difficult time understanding the steroid usage.  Does this dude think that he will get away with it when dozens of other athletes did not?  Is it worth it Manny?  I mean seriously.  There must either be far more rampant usage of steroids, or else you are an idiot.

Yeah, he may be a good player, but he has no respect from me.

I hope I haven't offended you huge Dodgers fans out there, I just don't get it.  Anyone have any insight?

I honestly do not think he was using steroids. Whatever he took from his doctor had that chemical in it. The reason I believe this is because he doesn't show any of the telltale signs of steroid users. First off, his stats are not inflated and neither is his size. Secondly, if you look at some of his homerun highlights, his homeruns aren't flyballs (this tipped off Barry Bonds, who hits flyballs 400 ft without any chemical help?!). Again, I think his story checks out. And, as far as his pay, baseball is about 2 decades late of having a salary cap. I have no idea why they don't institute one. It wouldn't stop them from being millionaires, but it would at least stop them from making as much as the entire payrolls of some of the teams in their league!

I just do not understand why so many baseball players are using steroids now. Whatever happened to playing a game because of the love of the game? I believe that it is just disrespectful for any professional athlete to disrespect their sport in that matter. Furthermore, any athletes caught doing steroids should be suspended indefinitely. The major sports in America have to send their athletes a strong message that steroid use will not be tolerated. I am glad that Major League Baseball finally decided to punish someone for steroid use. However, why did it have to be Manny? Dodgers were finally doing well and now we just have to hope for the best.

Alex Sa.,

Steroid use in baseball is definitely a major issue. But when it comes to those drug tests, the test looks for chemicals that are deemed as "steroids" (for example, there was a case where an Olympian tested positive for opium because she had eaten a muffin that had poppy seeds in it. Poppies are the same type of flowers used to make opium). This is what I believe made Manny's test go positive. So, in his lone case (and others like it), he gets punished for a chemical found in his blood stream. Although it doesn't bring him back for 50 games, I don't believe Manny was taking steroids since he does not show the typical signs. I think he used a drug that had "steroid" content in it (they said it was a female sedative that is used to help steroid users recover faster or bring them down from the "highs"). He could not have known, but, at the same time, the accountability falls on him for not doing the personal research on the drug the doctor prescribed him. I think he was smart for taking responsibility.
