For many people, the very name of Jesus brings a specific idea or image to mind. Some of these images are based on some understanding of Scripture (Free Will Jesus), while others aren't based on anything biblical at all (You Should Get a Divorce and Marry a Younger Woman Jesus). Some are just funny (Testosterone Jesus and Magic 8 Ball Jesus). All of these Jesus representations, and many others, make an appearance in Matt Mikalatos' debut, `not so true' story, Imaginary Jesus. The characters must journey through time and space to debunk any number of false representations of Jesus to encounter the real Jesus. This is done convincingly well.
This book is funny - really funny. I laughed out loud on just about every page. So did my 13 year old son, which is saying a lot. While the average reader would find many statements and situations humorous, a reader with extensive Bible knowledge/church exposure would be amazed at how bitingly accurate this concept was explored.
This book is deep. Beyond the surface, some very serious issues and concerns are addressed. Issues such as why God allows suffering and how we should treat people who don't believe like we do. Serious stuff; very effectively approached.
This book is probing. Just where do I get my perception of Jesus? Is it based on Scripture or is it cultural? Reality or wishful thinking?
This book provides the perfect vehicle for a much needed, soul searching dialogue. I highly recommend it. I received a complementary copy of Imaginary Jesus from Tyndale House Publishers for review purposes. No other compensation was received
